I am a crafty
girl.
When I was
seven years old, my aunt Sue, who is a self-proclaimed professional artist,
gave me a book about making sculptures out of clay. Ever since, I have been obsessed with crafting and creating things.
I’m not one of those Pinterest or Etsy girls who spends a majority of her time
doing arts and crafts, but in my free time I sculpt, paint, decorate cakes, bake,
even occasionally knit and sew for fun. I’m not particularly skilled at any of
these things, but I enjoy doing them because they are good relaxation
activities.
When I was a
freshman in college, I became enamored with the art of mask making. So much so
that when I went to Venice in Italy, I spent part of the day following around
and essentially harassing a mask maker about his craft. Mostly I make them for
fun, for Halloween, for some of the kids I babysit and once for the entire cast of a Shakespeare production.
Sometimes I
just like being able to do things for myself. I like that I know how to make,
bake and decorate a four tiered wedding cake. I like that if need be I can
actually darn socks. I can legitimately say that most of the art in my room is
mine, created by me. Who knows what I
will learn how to craft next. Maybe I’ll do that collage stuff.
Challenge to
my Readers:
Be crafty.
Find something online or in a magazine that you have always wanted to have and
figure out a way to create it yourself. It might be a new recipe or a table for
your bedroom (my next project.) The important part is that you at least try to
do it yourself.
