I am an
awesome cake decorator.
Those of you who have seen my pictures on
the book of face know that I take great pride in my cake decorating. I’ve
been doing it since I was about twelve. I took lessons from a family friend and
even worked in a bakery (in someone’s garage) for a while. Later, when I made
spare change in high school and college as a caterer, I also pimped out my
decorating skills.
Okay, I’m not
actually a cake boss. I hate working with fondant. I hate doing wedding cakes
(not because of the cake but because of the brides) and I really, really hate
people who have no concept of reality. They
think that just because they saw it in a tv show on Food Network that every
cake decorator in the country can do it.
But I am
proud of my skills because cake decorating is one of those things people never
think about needing until they actually need it. Which is poor planning on your
part, but I understand. Just remember
that cake decorating takes a lot of skill and hard work, both to learn and to
perform. Remember also that gravity, humidity and weather are also a thing
out here in the west and if someone tells you that no, you can’t have a six
foot sugar spun Eiffel tower on your Sweet Sixteen cake for your party in the
Arizona desert, just shut up and listen.
(She knows
who she is and hopefully will read this and be shamed. SHAMED!)
Challenge to
my Readers:
Cake
decorating and candy making are super fun and surprisingly easy to learn the
basics of. Take a class at a Michaels or grab a friend in the know and learn a
new trick. Pimp yourself out for parties and events to make a few extra bucks
on the side.
