Day Forty Three: Animals

I love animals.
Who doesn’t? Well lots of people that I know kind of like animals, from a distance. But I love them. All of them. I think the animal kingdom is the only thing worth being a hippy for. Animals are hands down the best thing on earth.
Right now I have three dogs hanging around my house. There is something about animals, especially dogs, that keeps people calm and makes them happy. I am especially thankful to my baby, Ecco, because he has helped to substantially lower the blood pressure of my cancer stricken father. My dad will never admit it, but having a puppy like Ecco in the house has helped cure his depression and helped him get back on his feet more.
I went to the zoo last night with a bunch of friends. It was dark and cold and we didn’t get to see many animals, but just being in their presence felt really good. I love the way my boyfriend’s eyes light up when he sees the elephants. Tony gets excited about the fish and Madison conquers her fears by having a stare down with the gaboon viper. Animals do so much for us; they’re like hidden superheroes, carefully building up the world around us and making it a safe and healthy place to play and live.

These days we don’t use animals a lot. There are few horse drawn carriages, dogs are domestic pets rather than hunting partners and livestock is thought of solely as food. They’re more of a luxury than a tool these days and because of that we take them for granted.
Me, I adore animals. I think they’re fabulous, and some time in my life I want to have a lot of them. I grew up around animals, I hope that my children can too.

Challenge to my Readers:
Get some fuzzy therapy today. Cuddle your cat, talk to your fish. Go to the puppy store and snuggle a puppy. Consider adoption. But don’t by one from the pet store; get an animal from a shelter. Take home a sweet, lonely friend and make the best choice of your life.
